Microsoft SQL Certification Path: What Actually Exists in 2026

Microsoft has no version-numbered SQL Server exam any more. Today's SQL path has two intermediate credentials: DP-300 (Azure Database Administrator Associate) for people who run databases, and DP-800 (SQL AI Developer Associate) for people who write them. DP-900 is an optional first step.

How we verified this

Every exam fact below was read on October 2, 2026 from Microsoft Learn: the Azure Database Administrator Associate, SQL AI Developer Associate, Azure Data Fundamentals and Cosmos DB credential pages; the DP-300, DP-800 and DP-420 study guides; Microsoft's retake policy; and the MCSA/MCSD/MCSE retirement notice. We do not quote exam prices or question counts because Microsoft's pages show prices per country and we could not confirm a stable figure. Microsoft changes these pages often, so check them before you book.

Why the old SQL Server exams are gone

If you are searching for a "SQL Server certification," you are probably remembering the MCSA era. Microsoft retired the MCSA, MCSD and MCSE programs and, in a notice first posted in February 2020, listed the SQL exams that went with them, including 70-461, 70-462, 70-463, 70-761, 70-762, 70-764, 70-765, 70-767 and 70-768, plus 70-777 for Cosmos DB. The retirement notice set June 30, 2020, and a later update moved the date for the remaining exams to January 31, 2021.

The same notice answers the question people still ask: there will be no SQL Server 2019 certification, and SQL Server content is included in role-based certifications as needed. That is why nothing is named after SQL Server 2022 or 2025. Microsoft's first role-based replacement for the database administrator track, DP-300, went to beta in April 2020.

A practical consequence: an old MCSA SQL line on your resume still reads as history, but it does not renew and it does not map to a current credential. Microsoft's Q&A moderators tell holders of retired certifications to start from current ones.

What are the current Microsoft SQL certifications?

Two credentials are squarely about SQL platforms. The others in the table are neighbours you may or may not need.

Renewal frequency is shown only where the credential page states it; Microsoft's study guides say associate, expert and specialty certifications expire annually and renew through a free online assessment.

Two dates in that last column matter if you are mid-study. DP-300's English update on October 27, 2026 is marked minor in Microsoft's change log (the security area changes slightly), and DP-800's on October 19, 2026 is also minor. DP-420 is the exception: its October 6, 2026 update comes with a new name, a new exam title (Building AI Applications with Azure Cosmos DB) and a large rewrite, so older Cosmos DB notes will mislead you.

Which SQL certification matches your job?

Answer these in order and stop at the first yes.

  1. 1. Are you new to databases or to Azure data services?

Take (or at least skim) DP-900. It covers relational and non-relational data and transactional versus analytical workloads. Our DP-900 study guide and the relational versus non-relational explainer cover that ground, and there are DP-900 practice exams if you want a check.

  2. 2. Does your day involve backups, failover, patching, migrations or tuning someone else's queries?

That is DP-300. Microsoft's audience profile describes managing availability, security and performance across Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs and on-premises SQL Server. Start with the DP-300 study guide, then the DP-300 cheat sheet.

  3. 3. Do you design schemas, write stored procedures and ship database changes through source control?

That is DP-800. It expects real T-SQL experience, and also GitHub-based CI/CD, AI-assisted development tools, and concepts such as embeddings and vectors. Read the DP-800 study guide and the DP-800 cheat sheet.

  4. 4. Is your data JSON documents in Cosmos DB rather than tables?

Skip the SQL pair and look at DP-420. Our Cosmos DB versus Azure SQL comparison helps you confirm the workload fits, and the DP-420 study guide has the exam details.

  5. 5. Are you moving data between systems into a lakehouse or warehouse?

That is data engineering, not DBA work. Microsoft retired the Azure Data Engineer Associate certification on March 31, 2025, and the Fabric-based DP-700 is the closest current option on our list. See which Microsoft certification is best for a data engineer.

DP-300 vs DP-800: where do they overlap?

People treat these as separate worlds, but the official skill lists share more than the titles suggest. Both test Always Encrypted, dynamic data masking and row-level security. Both test Query Store, execution plans and dynamic management views for diagnosing slow queries. Both now mention SQL in Microsoft Fabric: DP-300 asks you to identify use cases for Azure SQL Database in Microsoft Fabric, and DP-800 lists SQL databases in Fabric among its platforms.

The difference is the verb. DP-300 asks you to recommend, configure and troubleshoot: choose a deployment offering, pick an online or offline migration, set up failover groups, restore to a point in time. DP-800 asks you to design, write and deploy: create temporal and graph tables, write window functions and JSON queries, build a SQL Database Project pipeline, expose tables through Data API builder, and build vector and hybrid search.

Which SQL exam should you take first?

Take the one that matches the work you already do, because both assume hands-on experience and neither lists a prerequisite exam. Microsoft states that DP-900 is not a prerequisite for the Azure Database Administrator Associate, and the DP-800 pages list none either.

  • Working DBA, no AI projects yet: DP-300 first. It validates what you do, and the HA/DR and migration domains are the hardest to fake with reading alone.
  • Application developer with solid T-SQL: DP-800 first. Its first two domains are ordinary database engineering; only the last domain (25–30%) is AI-specific.
  • Developer moving toward operations, or DBA moving toward development: take the exam for your current job first, then the other. The shared security and performance topics make the second one noticeably lighter.
  • Career changer with no database job yet: DP-900, then build something on Azure SQL Database before choosing. Associate exams punish memorization without hands-on time.

Timing tip: both skills lists change this month (DP-800 on October 19, DP-300 on October 27, 2026). Make sure your study material, including practice questions, names the same domains Microsoft shows today. The free DP-300 practice questions and free DP-800 practice questions are a no-cost way to test where you stand.

Is a Microsoft SQL certification still worth getting?

Honest answer, in two parts. First, the generic search phrase "Microsoft SQL certification" is shrinking in the keyword tools we use. We would not read that as a drop in database work: people now search by exam code (DP-300, DP-800) or by job title instead, and Microsoft has deliberately stopped selling a product-version badge. We are not quoting search-volume numbers because different tools disagree.

Second, Microsoft itself keeps investing in the SQL credentials. It added DP-800 in 2026, and Partner Center announcements list the SQL AI Developer Associate as a new skilling option for the Data & AI Solutions Partner designation (the July 2026 partner announcement). That is useful if you work at a Microsoft partner, and a reasonable signal that the SQL track is not being wound down. It does not tell you what any given employer pays for a certificate, and we will not invent salary figures. Treat the exam as proof of skills you can also demonstrate, not a substitute for them.

One cost to plan for: DP-300 and DP-420 certifications expire after 12 months, so the real commitment is a yearly free renewal assessment. If you let one lapse, a Microsoft Q&A answer says you have to pass the exam again.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a SQL Server 2022 or SQL Server 2025 certification?

No. When Microsoft retired the MCSA, MCSD and MCSE programs, its FAQ stated that there would be no SQL Server 2019 certification and that SQL Server content would be folded into role-based certifications as needed. The same has held since: SQL Server skills are tested inside DP-300 and DP-800, not in a version-numbered exam.

Which Microsoft SQL certification should a beginner take first?

Start with DP-900 (Azure Data Fundamentals) if databases are new to you. Microsoft says it is useful preparation for the Azure Database Administrator Associate but is not a prerequisite for it. If you already write T-SQL daily, you can go straight to DP-300 or DP-800.

Is DP-300 still available, and does it expire?

Yes. DP-300 (Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions) earns the Azure Database Administrator Associate certification, which has a 12-month renewal frequency. Microsoft lists an update to the English exam on October 27, 2026, and no retirement date. You renew with a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

What is DP-800?

DP-800 (Developing AI-Enabled Database Solutions) earns the SQL AI Developer Associate certification. It is aimed at T-SQL developers building on SQL Server, Azure SQL and SQL databases in Microsoft Fabric, and covers advanced T-SQL, security and CI/CD, plus vector search, embeddings and retrieval-augmented generation.

Is there a Microsoft SQL developer certification that is not about AI?

Not at the moment, based on the Microsoft Learn credentials we checked. The old MCSA developer exams such as 70-761 and 70-762 retired in January 2021, and DP-800 is the current SQL developer credential. Its first two domains, covering database design, T-SQL and security, are not AI-specific.

DP-300 or DP-800: which is harder?

They are hard in different ways. DP-300 rewards operational judgment across migration, backup and restore, high availability and automation. DP-800 rewards T-SQL depth and unfamiliar newer features such as vectors and Data API builder. Both need a score of 700 to pass, so pick by the work you do, not by difficulty.

How many times can I retake a Microsoft SQL exam?

If you fail, you wait 24 hours before the second attempt and 14 days between later attempts. You cannot take the same exam more than five times in 12 months from your first attempt. You pay for each retake. Renewal assessments have no attempt limit.

Do I need Cosmos DB or Fabric certifications to work with SQL?

No. DP-420 covers Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL, and DP-700 and DP-600 cover Microsoft Fabric engineering and analytics. They are adjacent, not required. Take them when your job moves to document databases or lakehouse pipelines, not as an extra step on the SQL path.
