DP-600, DP-700, and DP-300 are three Associate-level Microsoft data exams that test three different jobs. DP-600 builds the semantic models and lakehouse/warehouse assets analysts consume, DP-700 builds the pipelines that feed them, and DP-300administers the relational databases underneath. The first two are Microsoft Fabric exams that overlap in places; DP-300 is a separate Azure SQL track. Domain weights below come from Microsoft's official study guides (skills measured as of October 2026).
Quick Answer: Which Should You Choose?
Choose DP-600 if you:
- • Build Power BI semantic models and write DAX
- • Hold or are considering PL-300 and want to move into Fabric
- • Work with lakehouses and warehouses from the analytics side
Choose DP-700 if you:
- • Build ingestion pipelines, notebooks, and Spark jobs
- • Work with streaming data (Eventstream, KQL)
- • Own orchestration, monitoring, and performance tuning
Choose DP-300 if you:
- • Administer SQL Server or Azure SQL databases
- • Handle backup, HA/DR, security, and query tuning
- • Are a DBA moving to cloud and hybrid environments
The Bottom Line:
Pick by the work you do, not by exam code. If you write DAX, take DP-600. If you build pipelines and Spark, take DP-700. If you tune and protect SQL databases, take DP-300. DP-600 and DP-700 are the natural pair; DP-300 stands on its own.

What DP-300 Tests (Azure Database Administrator)
DP-300 is for database administrators who manage cloud and on-premises databases built on Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs, and SQL Server on-premises, using T-SQL and automation tooling.
Plan and implement data platform resources (15–20%)
Choosing and deploying offerings, scale and performance configuration, and migration strategy.

Heads-up:Microsoft's DP-300 study guide shows updated skills measured effective October 27, 2026 (a minor change to the data-at-rest and in-transit security objectives). If you are studying now, work from the current objectives.
Where DP-600 and DP-700 Overlap
Both Fabric exams test the governance and lifecycle layer of a workspace, which is why holding one shortens the other:
- • Workspace-level and item-level access control
- • Row-level, column-level, and object-level security
- • Sensitivity labels and item endorsement
- • Version control and deployment pipelines
- • SQL and KQL for querying lakehouses, warehouses, and Eventhouses
Unique to DP-600
- • DAX, calculation groups, field parameters
- • Direct Lake and storage mode choices
- • Composite models and incremental refresh
- • Power BI Desktop projects and XMLA deployment
Unique to DP-700
- • PySpark and Spark structured streaming
- • Pipelines, notebooks, and orchestration patterns
- • Eventstream, windowing, and Real-Time Intelligence
- • Mirroring, shortcuts, and incremental load design
DP-300 shares little with either: it is T-SQL and Azure SQL operations rather than Fabric. The shared themes are security concepts such as row-level security and dynamic data masking.
Recommendations by Role
Power BI Developer / BI Analyst
DP-600 first. Your DAX and semantic-model skills carry forward; the new ground is lakehouse/warehouse SQL and Direct Lake. See also our PL-300 content if you do not hold it yet.
ETL / Data Engineer
DP-700 first. Pipelines, Spark, and streaming are your daily work; add DP-600 later if you also own the semantic layer.
SQL Server / Azure SQL DBA
DP-300. It maps directly to your operational role. Add DP-700 afterwards if you are moving toward data engineering on Fabric.
Full-stack Fabric Professional
DP-700 and DP-600 together. The overlap in governance and lifecycle topics makes the second exam much faster than the first.
New to Data on Azure
Start with DP-900 (Azure Data Fundamentals), then choose the Associate exam that matches the role you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between DP-600 and DP-700?
DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate) tests building the analytics assets people consume: lakehouse and warehouse transformations, semantic models, DAX, and Direct Lake. DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate) tests the layer that feeds them: pipelines, notebooks, PySpark, Eventstreams, mirroring, and monitoring. Both are Associate-level Fabric exams, which is why they are so often confused.
Is DP-300 still relevant now that Fabric exists?
Yes, for a different job. DP-300 (Azure Database Administrator Associate) covers operating Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs: security, performance tuning, automation, and high availability and disaster recovery. Fabric analytics work and relational database administration are separate roles, and Microsoft maintains a separate exam for each.
Which of the three is hardest?
It depends on your background. DP-700 is broadest in tooling (SQL, PySpark, KQL, pipelines, streaming), DP-600 leans on DAX and semantic-model design, and DP-300 demands real T-SQL, execution-plan, and HA/DR experience. Hands-on time in the relevant product matters more than the exam code.
Do I need Python or PySpark for DP-600?
No. Microsoft lists SQL, KQL, and DAX as the query languages for DP-600. PySpark appears on the DP-700 skills outline instead, alongside SQL and KQL.
Can I take DP-600 and DP-700 together?
Yes. They share about a quarter of their ground (workspace and item-level access control, row- and column-level security, sensitivity labels, version control, and deployment pipelines), so studying one makes the other noticeably faster. Many Fabric professionals hold both.
What is the passing score for each exam?
Microsoft's official study guides for DP-600, DP-700, and DP-300 each state that a score of 700 or greater is required to pass.
Should a beginner start with one of these?
These are Associate-level exams. If you are new to data on Azure, start with DP-900 (Azure Data Fundamentals), then pick the Associate exam that matches the role you want.
