Both certifications are about the Microsoft Power Platform — but they serve very different purposes. Here's how to decide which one is right for your goals.
Quick Answer
- • Take PL-900 if you want to understand what the Power Platform is and build toward any Power Platform certification path
- • Take PL-100 if you're already building apps in Power Apps and want to validate your hands-on app-making skills specifically
- • PL-900 is broader (all Power Platform tools); PL-100 is narrower (Power Apps and app-making focus)
- • PL-100 is harder and more hands-on; PL-900 is conceptual and easier

What PL-900 Covers
PL-900 is a survey of the entire Power Platform. It tests your ability to describe what each component does, when to use it, and how they work together — at a conceptual level.
PL-900 does NOT require you to have built anything. You can pass it having never opened Power Apps or Power Automate — the exam tests conceptual understanding.
What PL-100 Covers
PL-100 (Power Platform App Maker Associate) is focused specifically on the app-making side of Power Platform. It goes much deeper into Power Apps and Dataverse than PL-900 does, and tests practical skills rather than conceptual recall.
PL-100 requires hands-on experience. Case study questions describe a business problem and ask you to choose the correct Power Apps formula, Dataverse configuration, or flow design. You cannot guess these without having actually built solutions.
Career Value Comparison
PL-900 Career Value
- • Demonstrates Power Platform awareness to any Microsoft-focused employer
- • Good for business analysts, consultants, project managers
- • Foundation credential before PL-200, PL-300, PL-400
- • Recognized across all Power Platform career paths
- • Lower career specificity — broad appeal
PL-100 Career Value
- • Targeted at citizen developer / power user roles
- • Valued by organizations hiring Power Platform Champions
- • Strong for "Fusion Teams" where business users and developers collaborate
- • More specific than PL-900 — higher specialist signal
- • Less recognized than PL-200 for consultant roles
Who Should Take Each
Take PL-900 if you are:
- • New to the Power Platform and want a structured conceptual foundation
- • A business professional who works alongside Power Platform developers and wants to understand their capabilities
- • Building toward any PL-level certification path (PL-200, PL-300, PL-400, PL-600)
- • Working in a Microsoft Partner organization that requires Power Platform certifications
- • A consultant or project manager evaluating Power Platform for a client
Take PL-100 if you are:
- • A "citizen developer" who has been building Power Apps and flows in your organization for 6+ months
- • A department champion who builds low-code solutions for your team
- • Someone who wants to demonstrate hands-on app-building credentials beyond the fundamentals level
- • Building toward PL-200 (Functional Consultant) and want an intermediate stepping stone
- • Part of a "Fusion Team" environment where business and technical skills overlap
Should You Take Both?
For most people, PL-900 first is the right approach, then decide whether PL-100 or PL-200 is more appropriate next:
- PL-900 → PL-100: Good for citizen developers and power users who build apps but don't do enterprise consulting. PL-100 validates the practical skills; PL-900 establishes the conceptual breadth.
- PL-900 → PL-200: Better path for consultants and functional leads. PL-200 (Functional Consultant) is more widely recognized in the consulting market than PL-100.
- PL-900 → PL-300: Ideal for data analysts and Power BI developers. Skip PL-100 entirely and go directly to the Power BI analyst cert.
Note: PL-100 is a niche certification that sits in an unusual middle ground — more practical than PL-900 but narrower in scope than PL-200. Some candidates skip PL-100 entirely and go directly from PL-900 to PL-200 or PL-300.
