Sample AB-400 Practice Questions

10 real questions from the free AB-400bank. Pick an answer in your head, then open β€œShow answer” for the explanation.

  1. 1. A partner web service must call Dataverse without a signed-in user, must not consume a paid Power Apps license, and must be limited to read access on the Account table. What should the architect configure?

    • A. An application user bound to a custom security role that grants read on Account
    • B. A shared maker account that holds the System Administrator security role
    • C. A guest user account that is licensed with Power Apps Premium
    • D. A service account that signs in with a password and multifactor authentication
    Show answer

    Correct answer: A

Server-to-server authentication uses an unlicensed application user tied to a Microsoft Entra app registration, and a custom security role limits what it can do. A shared administrator account breaks least privilege, a licensed guest user consumes a license, and an interactive account with multifactor authentication cannot run unattended.

  2. 2. A small business has no developers. When a support case is escalated in Dataverse, an external ticketing system must be updated within a few minutes, and the team wants to avoid maintaining custom code. What should the architect recommend?

    • A. A synchronous plug-in that posts to the ticketing API
    • B. A custom workflow activity compiled into an assembly
    • C. A PCF component on the case form that calls the API
    • D. A Power Automate cloud flow triggered when the case is escalated
    Show answer

    Correct answer: D

Power Automate provides low-code triggers and connectors that cover many scenarios once handled by plug-ins, and it does not require a developer to maintain code. The plug-in, the custom workflow activity, and the PCF component all require developer skills and code upkeep.

  3. 3. A canvas app must show a shipping estimate immediately as the user changes quantities, and it must use current Dataverse data. Which implementation gives the lowest latency?

    • A. Power Fx formulas evaluated in the app against Dataverse
    • B. A cloud flow that is called from the app and returns the estimate
    • C. A custom connector that calls an Azure Function on each keystroke
    • D. A scheduled flow that writes estimates to a table each hour
    Show answer

    Correct answer: A

Power Fx evaluates live in the app, so it delivers the lowest latency against current Dataverse data for common scenarios. A called flow adds asynchronous round-trip time, per-keystroke connector calls add cost and delay, and an hourly scheduled flow produces stale data.

  4. 4. Users in a matrix organization work across the Sales and Support business units and need access to contact rows owned by both. The environment uses modernized business units. How should access be granted?

    • A. Assign the user a security role in each business unit so the owning business unit grants access
    • B. Move the user into a parent business unit that owns the contact rows
    • C. Create an owner team for each contact row and add the user to it
    • D. Share each contact row individually with the user
    Show answer

    Correct answer: A

With modernized business units, the owning business unit column of the row decides access, so a user who holds a security role in each relevant business unit can reach rows owned by both. Moving the user, creating per-row teams, and sharing each row are older or manual workarounds that do not scale.

  5. 5. A retailer wants store managers to log inspection results from a phone and keep the results in a governed, relational data platform that supports role-based security. Which Power Platform component should store the inspection data?

    • A. Microsoft Dataverse tables secured by security roles
    • B. A Power Automate cloud flow that holds the results in variables
    • C. A Power Apps component library shared across canvas apps
    • D. A Power Fx formula that caches the results on the device
    Show answer

    Correct answer: A

Dataverse tables provide relational storage with role-based security at the row, column, and table level, which fits governed inspection data. A cloud flow only orchestrates steps and does not persist business data, a component library packages reusable UI controls, and a device cache is neither governed nor shared.

  1. 6. A canvas app must call a payment action in a SaaS product and read the confirmation. The payment is an operation to invoke, not a record to create or update. The data is not needed in Dataverse rows, views, or reports, and no Dataverse capacity should be consumed. Which option should the architect choose?

    • A. An elastic table that stores the payment confirmations
    • B. A connector that calls the SaaS action from the app
    • C. A virtual table that maps the payment API to rows
    • D. A standard table synchronized by a nightly dataflow
    Show answer

    Correct answer: B

A connector calls the SaaS operation directly and stores nothing in Dataverse. Elastic and standard tables consume Dataverse storage, and a virtual table models external data as rows, which is unnecessary for invoking a single action.

  2. 7. Which statement describes Power Apps code apps?

    • A. A low-code designer that generates Power Fx screens
    • B. A Dataverse form extension written in Power Fx
    • C. A Copilot Studio topic authored on a visual canvas
    • D. A custom web app built in a code-first IDE that runs on Power Platform
    Show answer

    Correct answer: D

Code apps let developers build custom web apps with frameworks such as React or Vue in a code-first IDE and run them on a managed Power Platform. The other options describe canvas app designers, form scripting, or Copilot Studio authoring.

  3. 8. A Copilot Studio agent collects a payment card number and captures consent before submitting an order. The exact steps and wording must be auditable and must not vary between conversations. Which approach should the architect use?

    • A. A deterministic topic with authored question and message nodes
    • B. Generative orchestration that plans the steps at run time
    • C. A knowledge source that supplies generative answers
    • D. A child agent that decides the steps with a language model
    Show answer

    Correct answer: A

Scenarios such as payment collection and consent capture call for classic, deterministic topics where the author controls each step and message. Generative orchestration, generated answers, and a model-driven child agent can vary the steps and wording between conversations.

  4. 9. An auditor must read one confidential account row that another business unit owns, for two weeks. The auditor's security roles must not change, and the access must be removable without a deployment. What should the admin do?

    • A. Add the auditor to an owner team of the owning business unit
    • B. Edit the auditor's security role to grant organization-level read on Account
    • C. Share the account row with the auditor and remove the share later
    • D. Move the account row into the auditor's business unit
    Show answer

    Correct answer: C

Sharing grants temporary access to a single row without altering security roles, and the share can be removed afterward. Joining an owner team, widening the role, or moving the row each changes broader access or ownership and needs more cleanup.

  5. 10. A cloud flow needs an API password kept out of Dataverse and out of the flow run history. Which approach meets both requirements?

    • A. A Text environment variable whose value is masked with the secure inputs option
    • B. A Key Vault Secret environment variable read by the RetrieveEnvironmentVariableSecretValue action with Secure Outputs turned on
    • C. A Key Vault Secret environment variable inserted from the dynamic content selector in the flow
    • D. A connection reference that stores the password inside the exported solution file
    Show answer

    Correct answer: B

A Secret environment variable keeps the value in Azure Key Vault, the Dataverse RetrieveEnvironmentVariableSecretValue action reads it, and Secure Outputs keeps it out of run history. Text environment variables are not encrypted, secret variables are not offered in the dynamic content selector, and a connection reference does not store a password in the solution.

AB-400 Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the AB-400 Extending Power Platform certification

What is AB-400?
AB-400 (Extending Microsoft Power Platform Solutions with Code and AI) is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Developer Associate certification. It validates the ability to design, develop, test, and troubleshoot solution components that use the extension points of Microsoft Power Platform and generative AI, including plug-ins, PCF components, code apps, custom connectors, integrations, and agents.
Does AB-400 replace PL-400?
Yes. Microsoft is transitioning PL-400 to AB-400 for the same Power Platform Developer Associate certification. Registration for PL-400 closes on October 16, 2026, and registration then opens exclusively for AB-400, which is available from October 16, 2026.
Can I still take PL-400?
Only if you registered for PL-400 on or before October 16, 2026. Candidates who registered by that date can continue to schedule and take PL-400 through October 30, 2026. After that date, AB-400 is the exam for this certification.
What is new on AB-400 compared to PL-400?
The skills measured went from six domains to four. New content includes building and deploying Power Apps code apps, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and app widgets, generative pages, Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio agents that integrate with Power Platform, Work IQ, Copilot Studio workflows, and managed identity for plug-ins. Content such as canvas app performance tuning and Power Apps improvements was removed or consolidated. The "Extend Microsoft Power Platform" domain is now the largest at 35-40%.
What topics are covered on AB-400?
AB-400 covers four domains: Build Microsoft Power Platform solutions (15-20%) β€” architecture, solution components, and ALM; Extend the user experience (25-30%) β€” client scripting, PCF code components, and Power Apps code apps; Extend Microsoft Power Platform (35-40%) β€” plug-ins, platform APIs, Azure Functions, cloud flows, and Microsoft Foundry agents; and Develop integrations (10-15%) β€” Dataverse events, data synchronization, and custom connectors.
What is the passing score for AB-400?
Microsoft role-based exams, including AB-400, require a score of 700 out of 1000 to pass. Scoring is scaled rather than a simple raw percentage. Confirm current exam details such as price and duration on the official Microsoft Learn exam page before booking.
How should I prepare for AB-400?
Start with the official AB-400 study guide on Microsoft Learn, then get hands-on with Dataverse plug-ins, PCF components, a Power Apps code app, and a custom connector. Because roughly 40% of the exam is the Extend Microsoft Power Platform domain, spend the most time there, then use scenario-based practice questions to find weak areas across all four domains.
Is AB-400 available in languages other than English?
At launch, Microsoft lists AB-400 in English only. If you need another language, PL-400 was offered in several languages, but it can only be taken through October 30, 2026 and only by candidates who registered by October 16, 2026.
