Do You Need Another Certification Before Taking SC-100?

You can register for and sit the SC-100 exam itself with no formal prerequisite — Microsoft's exam page lists none. But the exam and the certification are separate things. To actually earn Microsoft Certified: Cybersecurity Architect Expert, you must also hold one of three Associate-level certifications: AZ-500 (Azure Security Engineer), SC-200 (Security Operations Analyst), or SC-300 (Identity and Access Administrator). Why SC-100 Tests Judgment, Not Configuration

Read the verbs in the skills-measured list closely: design, recommend, evaluate, specify requirements. Almost none say configure or implementa specific setting. That's deliberate — SC-100 assumes you already know how to click through the Azure portal or PowerShell from your prerequisite Associate exam, and instead tests whether you can choose the right architecture for a stated business constraint.

Practically, this means memorizing a feature list gets you less far than in a configuration-heavy exam. A question is more likely to describe a regulated industry, a hybrid estate, and a specific risk, then ask which combination of Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Purview, and Entra capabilities addresses it — with several answer choices being individually real features that simply don't fit the stated constraint.

Exam-Day Tactics for SC-100 Case Studies

Read the business constraint before the technical options

Case studies front-load company context (industry, regulatory exposure, existing infrastructure) that later questions depend on. Skimming past it to get to the answer choices costs more time than it saves.

Know you can't return to a case study after a break

Microsoft's exam policy allows breaks during case studies, but you lose access to every question you've already viewed once you leave. Finish a case study's question set before stepping away.
